(2/6/08 Chico, CA) The Shasta boys' freshman basketball team took a close 39-35 decision over Pleasant Valley Wednesday at Varley Gym.
Nolan Brickwood made a basket and a free throw 36 seconds into the game to give the Wolves their first points of the contest. Dylan Burington made a basket with 6:44 remaining in the first quarter as the Vikings trailed 3-2. Jordan Rigsbee's shot with 2:36 to go in the period gave PV a 6-5 lead. A three-pointer by Azelarab Reda with 1:01 left in the first put Shasta ahead 11-9.
Reda's bucket 39 seconds into the second quarter allowed the Wolves to tie the game at 13-13. A three from Darren Thomas with 4:46 to go in the first half put the Vikings ahead 16-15.
Samuel Baker made a free throw 30 seconds into the third quarter as Shasta tied the game at 18-18. A free throw by Brandon Coburn with 4:53 to go in the third allowed Pleasant Valley to tie the score at 19-19. Clay Cavender's three-pointer with 2:37 left in the period put the Wolves ahead 22-19. Rigsbee's hoop with 56 seconds to go brought the Vikings within a point at 22-21.
Clayton Eagleton's basket with 3:17 remaining in the fourth quarter brought PV within two points at 31-29. A free throw by Reda with 1:32 to go in the game put Shasta up 34-31.
Reda led the way for the Wolves with 14 points. Henry Dalrymple scored eight points and collected six rebounds for the Vikings, while Coburn added eight points and four rebounds.
