WOLF JV BOYS PULL ONE OUT AT PLEASANT VALLEY

(2/6/08 Chico, CA) The Shasta boys' junior varsity basketball team escaped Varley Gym Wednesday by taking a 60-59 win over Pleasant Valley.
 
Reed Crane opened the Wolves scoring with a basket 19 seconds in. A bucket by Bren Haley with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter accounted for the Vikings' first score of the game. A basket and a free throw by Haley with 3:04 to go in the period gave PV a 9-8 lead. Jacob Albertson made a hoop with 1:44 left in the first to give Shasta a 10-9 lead.
 
Matthew Wayda hit a shot 30 seconds into the second quarter to cut the Wolves' deficit to a point at 14-13. Riley Bentley made a bucket with six minutes left in the first half to put the Vikings up by three points. Shasta took a 23-22 lead when Crane hit a shot with three minutes to go in the half. A free throw from Haley with 1:21 left trimmed Pleasant Valley's deficit to 26-23.
 
Crane's basket with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter gave the Wolves a 31-25 lead. Bentley brought the Vikings within four points when he made a shot with 4:58 to go in the period. Jordan Rodrigues made a three-pointer with 2:55 left in the third as PV came within two points at 35-33. A hoop from Joseph Fanton with 53 seconds left allowed Shasta to tie the contest at 40-40.
 
Michael Lauritzen's three-pointer 18 seconds into the fourth quarter cut the Wolves' deficit to 44-43. Bentley responded with a shot of his own 25 seconds later to open the Vikings' scoring in the fourth. Crane's bucket with 3:35 to go in the game put Shasta up 53-51. Bentley hit a bucket with 2:07 left to give Pleasant Valley a 55-54 lead. However, the Wolves took the lead for good on a pair of threes by Evan Taylor.
 
Crane led the Wolves with 14 points and eight rebounds. Dallas Chadwick scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Haley scored 14 points to lead the Vikings. Bentley scored 13 points and collected five rebounds.
