VIKING FROSH GIRLS HAVE NO TROUBLE

(1/8/08 Chico, CA) The Pleasant Valley girls' freshman basketball team held Shasta without a point in the third quarter and went on to take a 38-16 win Tuesday at Varley Gym.
Carly Summerville opened up the Vikings' scoring with a basket 16 seconds into the game. The Wolves took a 3-2 lead on a bucket and a free throw by Carmen Gingery with 6:44 remaining in the first quarter. Shasta took an 8-4 lead on Gingery's hoop with 3:16 to go in the first. Jessica Crane allowed PV to tie the score at 8-8 with a basket with 2:27 left in the period. Summerville's shot with 37 seconds left in the first put the Vikings ahead 12-8.
Pleasant Valley's first points of the second quarter came with 6:08 to go on a shot by Caitlin Dunn that put the Vikings up 14-8. Gingery's bucket with 5:30 remaining in the first half cut the Wolves' deficit to six points at 16-10. Nicole Briggs made a hoop with 2:16 to go in the half to give PV a 20-12 advantage. Briggs' basket with 40 seconds left gave the Vikings their first double digit lead of the evening at 22-12.
Janae Dugas connected on a hoop with an assist from Emma Parsons 13 seconds into the third quarter for Pleasant Valley's first score of the second half. Parsons would make a shot of her own with 4:28 remaining in the third to give the Vikings a 30-12 lead. Crane's buzzer beater at the end of the period gave PV its first 20-point lead of the game.
Taylor Davis made a free throw with 6:54 remaining in the game for the Vikings' first point of the fourth quarter. Shasta ended its scoring drought Shyla Mayhall made a basket with 5:23 to go in the contest as the Wolves trailed 33-14. A bucket by Nastascia Langfield Zwaga with 2:37 left in the fourth kept Shasta within 19 points at 35-16.
Summerville led Pleasant Valley with 12 points. She also added four rebounds and four steals. Dunn scored six points and grabbed five rebounds, while Crane added five points. Gingery led the way for Shasta with seven points.
