VIKING FROSH GIRLS OUTLAST COUGARS

(1/29/08 Chico, CA) The Pleasant Valley girls' freshman basketball team came away with a 35-24 win over Foothill Tuesday at Varley Gym.
 
The Vikings needed four seconds before Nicole Briggs scored the game's opening basket. A free throw by Shannon Jimenez with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter allowed the Cougars to cut their deficit to 5-3. A bucket off a steal by Emma Parsons with 2:47 to go in the period gave PV an 8-3 lead. Jean Mutch hit a shot with 29 seconds left in the first as Foothill was down 8-5.
 
Briggs helped the Vikings take a 10-5 lead with a bucket 49 seconds into the second quarter. The Cougars got their first points of the second when Bethany Duval made a hoop with 6:22 left in the period. Kate Petersen hit a free throw with 3:51 remaining in the first half to put Pleasant Valley ahead 14-7. Carly Summerville's basket with six seconds to go in the half gave the Vikings an 18-9 lead.
 
Aubrae Pearson made a shot 26 seconds into the third quarter for Foothill's first score of the second half. Pleasant Valley reached 20 points when Caitlin Dunn made a hoop 26 seconds later. Pearson's basket with 3:41 remaining in the third kept the Cougars within eight points at 21-13. A free throw from Jessica Crane with 1:07 to go in the period put the Vikings up 24-13.
 
Emma Limburg's bucket 27 seconds into the fourth quarter gave PV its first points of the period. Kamie Langford responded with a hoop of her own 17 seconds later as Foothill was down 26-15. Summerville made a pair of free throws with 3:18 remaining in the game to give the Vikings a 31-20 lead. Jimenez made one of two free throws with 2:28 left to cut the Cougars' deficit to 33-21.
 
Summerville led Pleasant Valley in scoring with 15 points. She also corralled six rebounds. Dunn scored five points and grabbed three rebounds. Jimenez led the way for Foothill with five points and eight rebounds.
