VIKING FROSH BOYS BREAK DOWN SPARTANS

(1/23/08 Chico, CA) The Pleasant Valley boys' freshman basketball team held Red Bluff to 10 second half points and went on to a 55-24 win Wednesday at Varley Gym.
A pair of technical free throws by Darren Thomas to start the game allowed the Vikings to take an early 2-0 lead. Eric Vidal made a basket and a free throw with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter allowed the Spartans to cut its deficit to 6-3. A shot by Henry Dalrymple with 3:54 to go in the period put PV ahead 11-3. A free throw by Tyler Davis with 1:19 left in the first brought Red Bluff within seven points at 13-6.
The Vikings took a 19-9 lead on a bucket by Ross Engstrom with 6:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Spartans got their first points of the period on a hoop by Carlos Tapia with 5:43 left. A three-pointer by Dylan Burington with 3:20 to go in the first half gave Pleasant Valley a 22-13 lead. A free throw by Davis with 1:16 left in the half cut Red Bluff's deficit to 25-14.
Thomas opened the Vikings' second half scoring with a bucket 33 seconds into the third quarter. A basket and free throw by Brandon Coburn with 5:11 remaining in the third gave PV its first 20-point lead at 34-14. The Spartans ended their scoring drought when Austin Wobbe made a free throw with 2:43 left in the period as Red Bluff was down 38-15. Ryan Andrew allowed the Vikings to reach 40 points on a hoop with 2:22 remaining in the third.
Pleasant Valley took a 46-16 lead on a shot by Jordan Rigsbee with 6:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. The first Spartan point of the fourth came 28 seconds later when Tom McGlynn made a free throw. The Vikings got to 50 points on a free throw by Andrew with 4:39 to go in the game. Ian Hill's free throw with 2:48 left in the fourth brought Red Bluff within 29 points at 51-22.
Burington scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds for Pleasant Valley. Rigsbee added seven points and eight rebounds, and Aaron Ellis scored six points and collected four rebounds. Vidal had five points and three rebounds for Red Bluff.
